More lessons from murders of Chelsea King and Amber Dubois
More details on the murders of two California teenagers came out Friday when the predator who killed them pleaded guilty.
John Albert Gardner III admitted to raping and killing 14-year-old Amber Dubois and 17-year-old Chelsea King. Dubois was attacked in February of 2009 while walking to school. King was attacked Feb. 25 this year while jogging in a park. The remains of both victims have been recovered.
Gardner also pleaded guilty to attacking another woman in December of 2009, about two months before he attacked King.
Gardner’s confession uncovered three key points for self defense:
- He took both victims away from the scene of the attack before raping and killing them. Never let a criminal take you away from the initial crime scene. He’s doing it because he can’t finish his plan at the scene of the attack. No matter what he does, not mater what he threatens, do not comply.
- He killed both victims within 90 minutes of the initial attack. You don’t have time bargain or work out an escape plan. Act immediately.
- His guilty plea confirmed that he was the perpetrator in the third attack. In December, two months before killing King, he attacked another woman, no doubt intending to do the same thing to her that he would soon do to King. That woman is a trained martial artist. She fought Gardner and got away unharmed.
It’s impossible to say if either Chelsea King or Amber Dubois would be alive today if they had been trained in self defense. But of the three women who crossed John Gardner’s path, only the martial artist survived.
If I could get on my knees and beg each parent of every teenager in this country, I would.
Please, please prepare your children to defend themselves.
Educate them on what to do, and have them train in a martial art (karate, tae kwon do, judo) or a combat sport, such as boxing or kick boxing. They will probably have fun, they will get great exercise and they will be as prepared as they can be to defend themselves.
Remember, it is the nature of these crimes that you won’t be there to help.
